Lesson 10.0 – Final Review & Checkride Preparation
You have completed the major subject areas required for the Private Pilot certificate. This final unit helps you consolidate your knowledge and prepare efficiently for both the FAA knowledge test and the practical test.
These are the primary free publications you should use:
Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge (PHAK) – FAA-H-8083-25C https://www.faa.gov/regulations_policies/handbooks_manuals/aviation/phak
Airplane Flying Handbook – FAA-H-8083-3C https://www.faa.gov/regulations_policies/handbooks_manuals/aviation/airplane_handbook
Risk Management Handbook – FAA-H-8083-2A https://www.faa.gov/sites/faa.gov/files/2022-06/risk_management_handbook_2A.pdf
Aeronautical Information Manual (AIM) https://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/publications/
Private Pilot – Airplane Airman Certification Standards (ACS) – FAA-S-ACS-6C https://www.faa.gov/training_testing/testing/acs/private_airplane_acs_6.pdf
Airman Knowledge Testing Supplement (Sport, Recreational, Remote & Private Pilot) – FAA-CT-8080-2H https://www.faa.gov/sites/faa.gov/files/training_testing/testing/supplements/sport_rec_private_akts.pdf
All of these are free PDF downloads from the official FAA website.
The Airman Certification Standards (ACS) is the official blueprint for both the knowledge test and the practical test. It tells you exactly what you are expected to know and demonstrate.
How to use it effectively:
Read the ACS early and refer to it often.
Use it as a master checklist for knowledge, risk management, and skill elements.
For the knowledge test: study the knowledge elements listed in the ACS using the PHAK, AIM, and other FAA handbooks.
For the practical test: the ACS tells the examiner what must be tested and the standards you must meet.
Pay special attention to the Risk Management elements — modern checkrides emphasize decision-making.
Treat the ACS as your roadmap for the entire training process.
